Classrooms and More

This section is to provide an example of what an ASL Classroom could possibly look like. These photos are taken from a school's ASL 1 & 2 classroom during an ASL 1 class period. The other portion of this page is dedicated to providing my local ASL students a way to get out and use their knowledge to help teach others and strengthen their signing abilities.

An ASL class can be taught by Deaf or hearing person. Depending on circumstances there might be an interpreter present. Below there will be video examples of how a typical day in an ASL class would be like. There is a mixture of students signing sentences to the teacher and the teacher signing to the students and teaching them new vocabulary. As you will see, this class is taught by a hearing teacher. The students are learning about time and how to properly sign sentences that have to do with times. There are also videos of the students learning and practicing "The Gum Story".

Local ASL Volunteer Opportunities

This opportunity is open to those in the local area who have taken an ASL course. Depending on skill level there are multiple option you have. The simplest is to read to the children and then take a little break in which you teach them the alphabet and some simple and fun signs. Another option is to read some books and then sign them one story you have learned such as an ABC story. A more advanced option is to sign them a whole story you know as well as reading to them! Since these are primarily hearing children and the purpose of this opportunity is to spread knowledge of the Deaf community and of Sign Language it is more productive to speak while signing and to give a brief explanation as to what ASL is.

About Me

This website was created by ASL 3 & 4 students with the purpose to spread American Sign Language. The goal of this website is to give a glimpse of what ASL is in order to inspire others to want to learn more about ASL and Deaf Culture.

In no way is this website a substitute for a real ASl course nor is a complete representation of ASL and the Deaf community. The website is based off of what we have learned over our time in ASL classes. The site does not cover everything there is to learn about the Deaf Community and ASL so if you are interested we recommend that you look for an ASL course to further your knowledge and ASL journey.

We hope that our website offers you significant amount of knowledge of ASL that will influence you to learn more and embrace Deaf culture.

Thank you for visiting!

Sincerely,

Signing Gold
